The Question: Lose Weight Quick, or Lose It For Good?

Generally, you can lose weight quick, or you can lose weight permanently. The reason you usually have to chose one or the other is that methods used to lose weight quickly do not normally translate into longer-term weight loss—sustainable methods tend to take longer. No matter what you do, it is not uncommon to see five pounds or more of weight loss within the first week of a weight loss program.

This is largely due to losing weight from excess water, and may be due to a number of factors. Sodium and sugar-laden foods tend to cause the body to retain water, so if these are even temporarily eliminated by any kind of diet, then you will most likely see noticeable water weight loss. Many diet pills have a diuretic effect that will produce the same result. But, just as soon as you stop taking the pills or your eating habits go back to their previous patterns, that water will be right back.

Highly calorie restrictive diets will also result in rapid weight loss, at least for a time. But as your body's survival mechanisms kick in, you will be subject to powerful urges which could result in binge eating, which again can put you right back where you were before… if you are lucky. When you gain weight back after dieting like this, it will come back as more fat than you had before! This is your body's way of preparing for the next time you try to starve it.

The best way to lose weight and to keep it off is to incorporate healthy eating habits and physical activity into your lifestyle. It is still possible to lose weight rapidly this way, but the real benefit is learning about what really works and sticking with it.
